How does my DefCom1 device work?
The device contains a powerful emitter at one end that generates a specific frequency and power of light. This is then beamed into the ear via the ear canal via a medical-grade speculum.
How Do I use it ?
Sit in an armchair and support your arm with a cushion. Hold the device and slowly position the speculum within the ear canal. The speculum is safe for our ears but it goes without saying that it should not be rammed in, though it is not long enough to reach and damage the ear drum. It should also not be used in those under 25.
Your device comes with several speculae of different sizes. Please use the widest one that feels comfortable for you.
Make sure the slide switch is set to green and then press the push-button. This will activate the circuitry , activate the emitter and also activate the timer which will last for 5 minutes. You’ll hear a ‘click’ as it finishes.
Repeat for your other ear.
After treating both ears, slide the switch to the red position.
How long do I use it for?
We suggest 4 weeks of treatment followed by 1 week’s rest. Use should be ongoing. Use it in the morning if you can. Some may prefer to use it for 5 days followed by two days rest in which case use should be continuous.
How do I charge the device ?
Make sure the slide switch is set to ‘red’
The USB-C cable and charger can then be used
A red light will appear within the casing which will change to blue when charging is complete.
We recommend little and often to preserve your battery.
Other points
Please look after your battery; it will last longer if you take time now to learn how to manage it.
More information can be found below.
Please note your device is meant to be used by just one person.
The emitter, the battery and the circuitry have been exhaustively tested, well beyond the limits set within the operating instructions as above. This being said, the device is not suitable for multiple users who use the device one after the other.
Your device is guaranteed for 1 year. Even after this we will do our best to support you.
A cradle is supplied which will serve as a useful stand for your device while it is charging.
Please note the basic cradle will not charge your device and you will need to plug in your USB-C cable and charge it from the mains.
An upgraded version is set for imminent release which features a solid oak or cherry cradle which will also allow charging of your DefCom1 device.
Battery Health
Your battery is your friend and, if looked after, will last for many years. Think of it a bit like a big Alsatian.
You would want to feed your Alsatian every night, not every month and then you’d feed him small amounts not great piles of food. So get into the habit of charging your battery maybe for an hour or two every week and don’t keep it on charge all the time. This way will lead to a happy and healthy battery which will give you many years’ service. You certainly don’t want to run your battery flat before you charge it as the performance of the special emitter will not be at its optimum.
As mentioned above, the device is easy to charge; simply make sure the slide switch is fully moved to the right , which is the charge position, then plug in your USB-C cable and connect it to your mains USB source. The charge light will glow red within the clear cylinder and will remain so until the battery is fully charged whereupon it will turn blue. Unplug your device from the mains at this point. Do not simply leave it charging. The device will then be ready for your next treatment session.
Cautions
The emitter in the unit uses part of the visible light spectrum. This is ordinary light but only a small slice of it is used – the bit known as the Far Red part of the spectrum. The emitter generates no Infra Red Light, nor is it a laser. For this reason it will not radiate heat into either your ear or your brain. This being said, the light produced is very very bright and please do not stare at the light with your naked eye. Also the speculae as provided are medical-grade speculae which are safe for use in the ears. We suggest to add to your protection that the speculum is always fitted to your device at all times and certainly when it is operational.
Anosmia
This is loss of smell. We mention it here as there have been many cases reported of loss of smell during and after Covid. Studies continue on the use of Vitamin A gel squirted up one’s nose and also the use of citrus fruits to re-invigorate the lining of the nose, known as the nasal mucosa. It seems reasonable to try far red light as generated by your device. Simply use a new speculum and introduce it carefully up each nostril at a time and activate your device. We can supply you with new speculae as and when needed.
Cleaning your DefCom1 device.
Please do not immerse your unit in water or get it wet. The case has holes which provide ventilation so that the emitter is kept cool at all times. Entry of water even in small amounts will most likely damage the delicate circuitry or the battery or both contained within.
In order to clean your device casing, we suggest Vuplex and a soft micro-fibre cloth. Use it gently and also please don’t allow Vuplex to enter the ventilation holes.
Vuplex has the advantage of reducing the static that builds up on the clear acrylic case and which causes it to attract dust.
